'V' for Vendetta
Review by MNF Model Cara
Title: V for Vendetta
Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama
Rating: R for strong violence and some language
Starring: Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea, Stephen Fry , John
Hurt
My Personal Rating: C
This movie is based in a futuristic England, where a complete state of totalitarianism oppresses its citizens from all individual
freedoms--including a nightly enforced curfew and a place where all protestors, gays and minorities are sent to be tortured and killed in death camps. The media too is controlled by the government so as that they may feed the citizens their lies and cover up any obscenities they don't want them to find out of. All of this is the day to day routine of England, until a mysterious, masked man only know as "V" (Hugo Weaving) comes from the shadows (literally...) to rise against the men behind it all, especially the evil Chancellor Sutler (John Hurt) who serves as a modern day "Hitler." Evey (Natalie Portman) is saved by "V" in a split second decision from a certain death during one of his plots. She finds herself befriended by him and is ultimately caught in the middle of his plot to bring freedom back to the oppressed citizens of England. As Evey and "V" grow closer she begins to discover the reasoning behind his rebellion as well as more about herself.
Ultimately, I thought this movie would pack more action based on the trailers I had seen leading up to the movie. It did maintain some typical fight scenes, but did not give me the action packed scenes the movie trailers seemed to depict. "V" seemed like a modern day Zorro/Robin Hood/Batman, but was nothing new in the sense of a character of this type we
have all seen many times before. He spoke in quick and sophisticated phrases most of the time that lost me (and ultimately their message) half the time because I could not follow his riddle-like speech. Overall, the movie did pack a good message about standing up against government dominance and bringing freedom and independence back to the people. It portrays a fictional world we could come to see if we allow our government to continue growing in their control with our every day lives and individuality.
Personally, this movie didn't do much for me because politics in general bore me to death and that pretty much was what the whole movie was about...but if politics is your thing or you are some sort of activist, undoubtedly you will love it.
