TITLE: Mission: Impossible 3
GENRE: Action/Adventure and Sequel
RATING: PG-13 for intense sequences of frenetic violence & menace, disturbing images & some sensuality
STARRING: Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames, Billy Crudup, Michelle Monaghan
MY OVERALL RATING: B
I am not usually one who enjoys ACTION movies, however I was pleasantly surprised when I went to see this one. Of course it was filled with the usual "mission impossible" scenes of Tom Cruise plummeting towards the ground from a wire, only to stop inches from the ground, explosions, and life-like masks...but the movie wouldn't be Mission Impossible without them! The story line was full of action and suspense, and I never once was bored with the plot. However, I did find myself not believing his love for his on-screen fiance (Michelle Monaghan) because I kept thinking of damn Katie
Holmes....
Anyhow, this time around Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is trying to settle down with his new fiance and lead a normal life...but of course, a very important mission interrupts this plan and he ends up going back into business. This time the mission is to stop the villain, Owen Davian (Philip Seymore Hoffman) from selling a deadly virus...coined "The Rabbit's Foot." Like the
previews hint at, it is only to be expected that Ethan's fiance gets wrapped up in the scheme by being kidnapped and held hostage. Although all the Mission Impossible movies seemed somewhat typical, I have to admit that this one kept my interest and had a seemingly followable story line....and of course some surprises, twists, and a little humor. I especially liked a scene where they made a latex mask of the villian's face and used special effects morphing it to "Tom Cruise's" face. The mask looked almost as good as the ones used in the old Scooby Doo cartoons...but only almost.
